Humane Society of West Michigan strongly discourages declawing of any cat or kitten for the convenience of their owners or to prevent damage to household property. Declawing can negatively impact the long-term health and/or behavior of your cat. Removing a cat’s ability to scratch is stressful and they may respond to that stress with undesirable behaviors. Declawing is the amputation of the last bone of each toe. If performed on a human, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle. Medical complications may also arise from declawing, including abscesses, painful bone spurs, and regrowth of a deformed claw.
