Your donations make stories like this possible...
In early 2024, Michigan enacted a new law called "Teddy's Law" which requires research facilities to send no longer needed test subject animals to reputable shelters. Previously, these animals faced an uncertain future, including potential euthanasia. As a result of this new law, HSWM received twelve research beagles in early July. These dogs had lived in wire cages inside a room with no windows their entire lives, never having touched the ground or seen grass. They didn't have names, had never played, and had no idea what it meant to be a dog. |
Within the first 24 hours of being at HSWM, the beagles showed an incredible amount of improvement. Canine behavior staff, animal care technicians, and dedicated volunteers spent hours caring for these dogs. Now, the beagles are getting a second chance at a happy life in their new forever homes. Pictured on this page is one of the rescued beagles, now named Penny. Her dedicated fosters played a large role in Penny’s rehabilitation, and ultimately decided adopt her. Now Penny is living in a loving home with her new parents and adopted sister, Copper. |
