From Car Rides to Flights: Your Guide to Traveling with Furry Friends

The Humane Society of West Michigan does not endorse any specific business and its goods or services referenced below. Give a loving pet a forever home by adopting from the Humane Society of West Michigan!
Hey everyone, Craig here!

As the holiday season approaches, many of us will be hitting the road, traveling to visit family, and spending quality time with loved ones. Bringing your furry companion along on your adventures can be an exciting experience, but it also requires thoughtful planning and execution to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey for both you and your pet. Whether you’re setting off on a road trip or flying to a faraway destination, traveling with pets demands a little extra preparation. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your pet safe, comfortable, and happy every step of the way.

Plan Ahead and Be Prepared

Pre-travel preparation is crucial to successfully traveling with your pet. Here are some things to consider before embarking on your journey:
  • Visit the Veterinarian:
    • Make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and is healthy enough for travel. It’s a good idea to ask your vet for any specific travel advice and check if you need a health certificate for airline travel or crossing state lines.
  • Pack Essential Travel Supplies:
    • Make a list of essential items such as food, bowls, water, medications, leash, waste bags, toys, grooming tools, a first-aid kit, etc.
  • Consider Microchipping Your Pet:
    • Losing your dog or cat while traveling can be every pet parent's worst nightmare. A quick microchipping procedure at your vet could give you peace of mind and help reunite you with your pet in case they get lost.
  • Check Pet Regulations for Each State/Country:
    • Your destination State or Territory may have certain animal health requirements, such as obtaining a health certificate, updating vaccinations, diagnostic testing, or administering treatments. Click these links for more information on Interstate Travel and International Travel.

Tips for Traveling with Your Pet

With different modes of travel available, there are several ways to make the journey more comfortable for your pet. Here are some helpful tips for both air and land travel.

Traveling by Car
  • Make Sure Your Pet is Constrained:
    • Pets must be properly restrained while in a moving vehicle. Try using a harness that attaches to a seat belt or an enclosed carrier. Using the crate your pet sleeps in is a great option because it's familiar and comforting.
  • Create a Comfortable Space:
    • Bring along your pet’s favorite toys or chew sticks to keep them entertained and help reduce anxiety during the journey. Don't forget a cozy blanket or pillow, as well as food and water, to ensure your pet stays comfortable and hydrated throughout the drive.
  • Make Frequent Pit Stops:
    • Map out walks and bathroom breaks ahead of time. Letting your dog stretch its legs, use the restroom outside, and getting some laps in can help exert nervous energy that’s associated to traveling.
  • Prepare for Motion Sickness:
    • Some pets may experience car sickness. If you know this is the case for your pet, ask your vet about anti-nausea medications.

Traveling by Plane

  • Check Airline Policies:
    • Each Airline has different rules for pet travel, it’s important to check the requirements in advance. Depending on the size of your pet, some airlines may allow smaller pets in the cabin in an approved carrier, while others may require pets to travel in the cargo hold.
  • Maximize Comfort:
    • If your pet is flying in the cabin, make sure the carrier is airline-approved and large enough for them to stand up and turn around. If your pet struggles with travel-related anxiety, consider investing in calming products and supplements.
  • Keep Your Pet Hydrated and Fed, But Not Full:
    • Pets should not have heavy meals before flying. Feed your pet between 3-4 hours prior to leaving and give your pet a bathroom opportunity close to departure time.

After Arrival: Settling In

Once you reach your destination, take time to help your pet adjust to the new environment. Whether you’re staying in a hotel, an Airbnb, or family/friend’s home, giving your pet time to settle in will make the transition smoother for both of you. Here are some ways to help them feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed in new environments:
  • Familiarize Your Pet with the Area:
    • Slowly introduce them to new rooms, people or other animals. And give them extra time and explore new environments at their own pace.
  • Establish a Routine:
    • Try to keep feeding and bathroom breaks at the same time as home to reduce stress. Consistency in their daily routine can help them feel more secure in an unfamiliar place.
  • Monitor for Signs of Stress:
    • Look out for changes in behavior such as excessive barking, trembling, or refusal to eat. If needed, consult a vet for advice on calming your pet.
Following these tips will help ensure that your pet stays happy and healthy this holiday season! Remember to be prepared, be safe, and have a fun time with your family, friends, and pets!

    Meet Our Paw-fessional Blogger!

If you don't already know me, my name is Bunny and I am a permanent resident of Humane Society of West Michigan! I have been a beloved pet here for over 10 years. I live at HSWM because of some limitations I have that would make it hard for me to live outside of the structured and loving environment here. But don’t worry - I get about eight walks a day, I always have the comfiest kennel full of blankets and stuffies, I get loved on by all the staff and volunteers, and work hard to help train the humans around here!

Thanks for coming to my blog to read about me and some of my friends at HSWM! I hope you enjoy learning a little bit about what we do here, and why it makes a difference.

    Love, your resident blogger,

    Bunny
