Did you find a litter of kittens outside and aren't sure what to do?
Then look no further!
In Michigan, "Kitten season" refers to the period, typically from spring to late summer, when a large number of kittens are born. During this time, Humane Society of West Michigan (HSWM) tends to see an influx of kittens come into our care.
Our team at HSWM is a happy to care for these little bundles of joy, and can offer round-the-clock care and bottle feeding thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers. However, not every kitten found outside needs to be brought to a shelter!
HSWM asks those who find kittens to follow these steps before bringing kittens to an animal shelter:
1. Don't Panic!
Many kittens born outside are being properly cared for by their mother. If they are healthy and the mother cat is present, it is better for their health to stay where they are.
2. Check if the kittens are clean, warm to the touch, and have a plump belly.
If the kittens are clean, warm, and full, they are well cared for and do not need to be brought in. If they are dirty, cold, or look skinny, bring them to our shelter immediately.
3. Check if the mother cat is around.
If the kittens' mother is attentive and still in the area, she is likely caring for the kittens and they should not be brought in. If you have not seen the mother for a while, and the kittens look unwell, bring them to the shelter so they can be cared for.
4. Check if the kittens are thin and lethargic.
If the kittens are plump and active, they are likely being properly cared for by their mother, and it is the best option for them to stay with her. If the kittens look unwell, think, or lethargic, they should be brought to our shelter immediately.
